It’s time for App Avalanche 13, and this week we’re taking a look at the Entertainment category in the App Store and at what’s Good, Better, Best, and, of course, the CrApp. There’s at least 26 (!) pages of Entertainment apps and counting. After exhaustive research by our highly-trained TiPb staff (please note: author taking massive liberties with the truth here; likely exaggerating), these apps have been hand-picked for YOU. Given that this is unlucky Avalanche 13, written on the 13th, I’m sure the author of the CrApp is feeling quite unlucky for being featured here!
Whoabuphew! Tell Buffy to stand down, Giles to close the books, and Willow to de-dark — for the moment-ish. Turns out the above travesty video of what we first thought was Windows Mobile running on the iPhone may just have been viral marketing much.
But you can’t un-raise that demon, now can you? The Hellmouth has been harshened, and it’s only a matter of time before someone gets all Voldermorty with it and tries to conjure up some Windows Mobile — or Android — style iPhone possession.
Sure, some people may be looking forward to that. Be we’ll just keep the crosses, garlic, and holy water at the ready. B’okay?

[You're tempted. We know you are. We are too. Even with the App Store, Jailbreaking is the ultimate in iPhone forbidden fruit. So what will it take to push us over the edge? How about the top 5 killer Apps. Stuff Apple will never allow in the official store? Jeremy rounds them up for us below, and if you do decide to take the plunge, he has you covered with full tutorials on how to Jailbreak the iPhone 3G with Quickpwn for Windows PCs, Mac OS X, how to Jailbreak and Unlock the original iPhone 2G.]
Our forums have been buzzing lately with members asking “why should I jailbrake?” Well today TiPb brings you some of the very best reasons: the top 5 must have Jailbreak Apps!
Hudson, maker of a ton of different iPhone games, is offering a limited time free download for three of their most popular games! We already told you about Aqua Forest, but now Catch the Egg and Neo Same Game have also been price dropped to the low, low price of FREE. Act fast and download now because the free trial offer is supposed to end on Oct 12th, which is only a couple hours away!
No offense to any Wal Mart shoppers out there, but please Apple, say this is not so. The Radio Shack scare was bad enough, now you are threatening to bring the iPhone 3G to Walmart?
iPhone lovers really dodged a bullet when the Radio Shack deal fell apart but now Boy Genius is reporting that you will start seeing the Apple product in all Walmart stores as early as next month.
“Walmart will begin selling the iPhone 3G next month - on November 15th to be exact”.
Keep in mind that this is just in time for the holiday shopping season. I’m not even sure Walmart sells any cell phones, but the last place I’d go to buy my Palm Treo Pro, iPhone 3G, or Touch HD — wishful thinking I know — is Wal Mart! Also keep in mind you can not walk out of a store without activating the iPhone 3G. How comfortable would you be letting a Walmart employee handle your prized possession?
Gizmodo brings word of what may be one of the higher profile, and more innovative Apps to hit the iTunes Store yet:
Developed by ambient pioneer Brian Eno and musician/software designer Peter Chilvers, Bloom explores uncharted territory in the realm of applications for the iPhone and iPod touch. Part instrument, part composition and part artwork, Bloom’s innovative controls allow anyone to create elaborate patterns and unique melodies by simply tapping the screen. A generative music player takes over when Bloom is left idle, creating an infinite selection of compositions and their accompanying visualisations.
I am the opposite of musical, so this one is beyond me, but if anyone out there gives this a whirl, please let us know how it goes!
No sooner did Apple drop the iPhone SDK Non-Disclosure Agreement (fondly referred to as the [Redacted] NDA among aficionados, as it forbade developers discussing the topic even among themselves), then the floodgates of knowledge burst open. Cases in point:
According to TUAW, iPhone coder extraordinaire Erica Sadun’s The iPhone Developer’s Cookbook is already available in PDF form from informIT (along with code samples!):
If you’re getting started with iPhone programming, this book brings together tested, ready-to-use code for hundreds of the challenges you’re most likely to encounter. Use this fully documented, easy-to-customize code to get productive fast—and focus your time on the specifics of your application, not boilerplate tasks.
Meanwhile, Mike Clark writes in to let us know that Pragmatic Programmers is now offering a set of screencasts targeted specifically at iPhone developers:
There’s also a free (no account required) 20-minute “Getting Started with Xcode and Interface Builder” screencast [where Bill Dudney] shows you how to build the simplest of iPhone apps (a Hello World app). More important, he shows you how it works—from the main functions triggering Nib files being loaded, to wiring up interface controls, and all the way through a button push running code that you write.
It’s that time of the week where we bring some of the discussions from the forums to the main page.
Big reminder to everyone, the voting for the latest TiPb AT WORK Contest ends tomorrow! This weeks contest, to do/task apps! Time is short so go get your vote on now!
Are you one of those people who is all about security? Well we want to know how many of you actually use the passcode lock on your iPhones? Chime in on his thread! I recently switched from MobileMe to a Exchange account and was personally interested in the following thread. Pascalcheck had a good question regarding Exchange with his contacts and calendar events. Rene was super quick to jump in and help out!.

The iPhone Blog merged with the Phone different site in May of 2008. Both sites were founded on a premise that comes one from one of Apple's old slogans: Think different. The iPhone Blog: for people who dare to phone different.
