When we moved here we wanted to try the cable modem. We had always had DSL, but it was unavailable when we moved in. It has been available for several years now. For a while we were mostly happy with the service.

Summer (07) we were down quite often. We were told we needed to replace our modem...not once, but twice. We were told we needed to replace our splitter, router and etc. We did. We had to give up TV in the main room with computer.

We had continued problems throughout the year and summer of 08. We were told to replace our modem in June. Again, in September we are told we need to replace the modem. Actually, every time they want to send a service tech out. If there is a problem then they will charge us.

We have super slow service tonight, but they are blaming our modem as not being seen so we have "no service". 3kb means the modem is on.

We are calling Embarq tomorrow. Hope have a better experience with them.

I apologize for any issues with your Cox Internet service. If you want to PM me the cable modem's MAC address I'd be happy to see what I can find out.

Pre Sales info was easy to find, the sales department was very quick to answer any questions that i had regarding the services and pricing. They were also one of the few companies I have talked to that made very sure that I knew that I had to buy equipment out of the gate which I appreciated very much.

The Install was a self install so I was pretty happy about the way it went since I did all the work myself. I called around 1:00pm on a saturday to set up the account, went down to the local office to pick up my equipment (waiting in line was the worst part of the entire process and took an hour) and they had the signal up and running by 11:00am the next morning. I was up and running in less than 24 hours from order to pulling my first webpage. Thats impressive.

Reliability is a hard meter for me to look at since i have only been up on this connection for one week. Its never been down and I have not had any speed issues at all so I will have to come back and update the review in a while.

Tech support always scores low for me because I have been either doing support, training support, managing support or doing project work relating to support for a long long time. The two techs that I did need to talk to were drones. They were not bad guys and actually they were pleasant to talk to, its just that they were going by the book and wanted me to do things that were completely irrelevant to the situation... Cox, if you are reading this please train your reps to think & not read off a list of "do this first, do this second and never deviate". Your customers will thank you for it.

The services are... well I get an IP and I get the 9mb/768k that im paying for. I never opt for any of the value added services that are offered from an ISP because I never wind up using them. But they do offer a lot of AV, firewall, parental controls and other items that a lot of people with children would be very happy to have as a value added service.

Overall the price is not bad compared to the other services that I have reviews on. 50 per month for 9mb down is a pretty good deal to me after being on DSL for several years. I would have to say that its worth the money so far.

I would have to say that after a long time avoiding cable in which my last experience was horrific, I am pretty satisfied with this service and I dont think that i would have a problem recommending it at this point to others.

    UPDATES:

in the couple months I have had the service, I have only had one problem with the service intermittantly dropping. Again, there are no bonus points for tech support as they told me that they would not even look at it unless I was actually down at the moment and told to call back. While I do understand that if something isnt actually broken, you cant actually fix it at the moment, telling customers to call back later because you are not going to look at it right now is just bad.

I have had some issues with slow speeds off and on, but those are resolved by cycling the cable equipment.

I ordered COX 1 week before I moved into my new house. The sales guy was very straight forward with me and was able to answer all of my questions. That was a pleasant surprise from my last ISP.

My HSI and Cable were scheduled to be activated the day I moved into my house. Upon moving in I discovered there were no cable outlets in the house at all (There was a large amount of furniture from the previous owners and they said they had COX). I called COX and they scheduled for a 3rd party contractor to come out and run the lines. That would be the next day.

Next day comes, contractor installs the wires (two outside lines and a wall fish). I call up COX and register my modem. I'm told it will take a while for the HSI to register with my modem by tech support. I goto work and when I come home that night I've still not got a HSI signal. I call up tech support we go through the normal things... nothing is working. I request for a technician to come out. The schedule one for Friday afternoon (this is Tuesday night now)

Friday afternoon shows up and the tech arrives early (he called me ahead of time... both of which were pleasant surprises). I'm not sure what he did since I had a good signal to the modem over the cable line according to his equipment but after 10 minutes I was in business.

That was two months ago and I've been using the living daylights out of my connection with out a problem.

I do alot of gaming and the standard COX service is perfect for me (4 meg down 512 up). I would recommend COX to anyone who moves to Phoenix

    ==============================

    THREEE YEARS LATER....

It's been just under three years that I've had Cox for Internet/Cable TV/ Phone and things are still moving along swimmingly. I upgraded to the "Premium" service level in the summer of '07 and that was a painless experince. I put in the upgrade request to the Cox via their website and I got a email back in 24 hours saying my account had been upgraded please reboot the cable modem.

All of my complaints are directed at their TV service, but this is not the forum for that. I would still recomend Cox internet to anyone who's moving to the Phoenix Metro Area.

    My Other Reviews·Verizon FIOS
I had Cox HSI for 5 years from March 2003 to March 2008.

Our family had dial up since 1997 with a dedicated line, but we could only get up to 33 kbps. We wanted to get faster internet, but Verizon said we couldn't get DSL to our home as there was no DSLAM installed in the area. So we sprung for Cox's service when it came out in NoVA. We received a self-install kit and a free Motorola Surfboard DOCSIS 1.1 modem. I began paying $35 for the 5mbps/2mbps service, but slowly it rose to $41. PowerBoost was available, but it didn't seem all that useful/helpful. After FiOS came to the neighborhood, I jumped ship because of the cable outages I suddenly began having. In addition to that, Cox had switched to SDV for their video service, so I could not receive as many channels on my CableCARD, the other reason I left Cox.

Overall, its was a pretty good service, but if there are any torrenters on your node, Internet sometimes slows down dramatically because of the shared nature of a cable plant.

    My Other Reviews·Vonage
I have had Cox HSI and their TV service for quit a few years and I can't say that I have anything bad to say about them. I have their fastest service which is 20mb (down) / 2mb (up) and when doing a speed test I would say 90% or more I get the full speed. We have 3 DVR boxes and all work just great w/ the HD service, just wish they would have a little more HD channels as well as a Network DVR so I could watch something on one box by pulling it over the LAN from a DVR box.

Otherwise other then that, it's great, fast service here in Cleveland, OH and love it!

"The worst internet service I have ever had"

I had the Cox premier connection which was supposed to be up to 12Mbps with a promotional rate of $25 for the first three months and $54 thereafter. I received a Motorola Surfboard cable modem that they charge $50 for and bill over the course of three billing cycles, with a $50 rebate credited to my account on the third bill.

Ordering service was easy, and all of their tech support and customer service people I spoke with were very friendly. Unfortunately excellent customer service does not translate into excellent internet service with Cox.

I had signal problems on my line and four different technicians were unable to fix my connection. I experienced frequent outages that could last a few minutes or hours if I was lucky, but on two separate occasions my internet was out for days and required a technician to come fix it. When the technicians came to fix the line they would get it working. A day or two later my connection would inevitably stop working again, and during the time the connection was up the speeds were generally very slow with high latency. Despite knowing there was a recurring problem with my connection, the technicians never diagnosed or fixed any underlying problems as far as I'm aware.

Unfortunately, the only time I would receive anywhere near the 12 Mbps in my "up to 12 Mbps" package was around 5-7 AM when most people are sleeping. Over the course of the day my speeds would drop, so during the afternoon I would be lucky to have 1-2 Mbps. My connection inevitably dropped to 300-500 kbps during peak hours from 6 or 7 PM - 11 PM.

I have switched to AT&T DSL up to 6 Mbps, and although it's rated at half the speed of cable, I usually receive that speed even during peak hours.

Ordinarily I would never submit such a horrible review, but I suppose I have been lucky never to have received such horrible internet service from any other ISP. I am not posting this to complain about Cox or declare them the worst ISP ever, because I know people who have had decent service. My personal experience is that Cox has delivered the worst internet service I've ever seen in over 15 years. If you sign up and experience similar problems, then I hope you have better luck getting them resolved,

I guess with Cox I paid the average price for cable internet, but I received speeds more in line with dial-up or a sub-par ISDN connection without the reliability.

Below this review I have included screen shots of two speed tests taken on different days during peak hours.

Webmail is worthless. Go with gmail.

Since my last post, Cox seems to have resolved its problem with regard to speed in Uptown New Orleans, at least I am now reliably getting speeds of 4500kbps or greater (advertised and pay for, hence expect 6000 kbps). Still have trouble streaming movies from Netflix. The Webmail is still absolutely terrible. For the moment, I am mollified, because I have no other options.

    Good Servie

My service is great. I live in Tempe , Az. I get an average download speed of 23,000 kbps and upload speed of about 560 kbps from the cox premium package. I would like to increase the upload speed quite a bit but the download speed makes up for that very well. Overall great service, any outages have been for maintanence, and for only $45.

Powerboost is the best for the money. considering that they partitioned my modem higher than normal (thats what happens when you bitch a few times in the past)

Im currently using a BEFCMU10 linksys cable modem, not their motorola.

I aslo heard that Cox in PV/OC might switch over to fiber.

It has been about 7 years now that I have been with Cox. For the most part, the connection is great! About twice a year it fails though and they have to come out. Typically it takes a week and a couple of visits but they get it fixed. I hate the stupid modem I have. I finally had to give up my Toshiba modem this year. They replaced it with some POS.

Tech support pretty much stinks. But who has good tech support anyways?

I love the speeds! I have maxed out at 21 Mbs Wow! I average about 10 to 15 now though.

I wish they would offer more speed tiers to compete more with DSL. I mean the $30 connection gets me 1.5 Mbps and $45 gets me 12Mbs. Huge jump there! I only really need 5 MB no reason that cant be in the low $30 range.
