These are 10 films that I believe if watched by the majority of US citizens there would be demands of impeachment, a push to pull out of Iraq and a complete shift in thought or at the very least some questioning of the government.

You have to understand something about the “masses”. They don’t give a S#!T. People don’t care. Personaly I don’t care. We will continue on with our lives as we always have. Its really hard to believe that I even spent this much time responding.
Justin // Nov 29, 2006 at 8:12 am
The problem is many of these have an obvious and bad liberal bias. For instance Loose Change and Suburbia have huge leaps and fallacies of logic that make me doubt the other points they make.
Not to say we shouldn’t be introspective, but most of these “films” try too hard to push an agenda.

“Loose Change”?! I can forgive this list for being otherwise opposed to markets and U.S. power — I don’t agree, but that’s fine — however, the inclusion of the aforementioned 9/11 conspiracy “documentary” is disturbing. which features some decent acting and sufficiently explains the plight of Mexican-American miners in 1954. While it’s based on a true story, I prefer documentaries:
Harlan County, USA

These are a couple of very socialist flicks and I for one, dig them and think you should watch them and consider what it means to be a worker in the US. If you’d rather start with lighter and in some cases funnier fare that deals with how the US treats people it has absolutely no right to be interfering with in the first place:

I do think it is a great list, but I also think that it is a little odd to promote free thinking with propaganda. Stay away from evil corporations like Apple, they are trying to take over the world.

Here’s a 10-minute film that definitely should be on the list. It’s a satire that parodies what the government would say if they made a film to teach people how to be “good citizens.” This film has been playing at film festivals in the last year or so.

The title of this web page is “10 movies the government would prefer people not watch” Yet, no where on this page is any government official quoted, any government document exposed, or any action by a government to censor or quash these movies. Certain politicians and pundits may have spoken out about “an Inconvenient Truth”, but that is not the same as a government position against a movie. And, “1984″. Does anyone really think that Dick Cheney lies awake at night and worries about that Grade 10 English class reading or viewing George Orwell? I think the list of movies is a good list, but let’s not kid ourselves. This list of movies does not cause the US government to shudder in fear.
Government Hater // Nov 29, 2006 at 10:03 am
Here’s a 10-minute short film that should be on this list. It’s called, “We’re the Government — and You’re Not.” It’s been playing at film festivals for the last year or so. It’s a parody of a “training video” that the government would make to teach people how to be “good citizens.”

I can’t believe you included ‘Loose Change’ in this list along with great stuff like ‘The Corporation’, ‘An Inconvenient Truth’ and ‘Why We Fight’. ‘Loose Change’ is just a mishmash clearinghouse of laughably fact-challenged conspiracy theories from the 9/11 ‘Truth Movement’, all of which have been thoroughly debunked on multiple occasions. Including it with these other films risks tainting them.
Readers, if you feel the need to watch Loose Change, do it; then give your head a shake and read the (very thorough, fact based, well annotated) debunking by the Internet Detectives at http://internetdetectives.biz/case/loose-change
Then forget about it the whole mess.
If the US government actually ever paid attention to this sort of thing, they’d probably prefer you to watch stuff like Loose Change. Every hour you spend watching conspiracy theatre is an hour you won’t spend watching some of the other important and socially significant films on this list. Every hour you spend reading about how the planes that hit the WTC towers were actually remotely controlled holographic drones is an hour you won’t spend reading about how the US government’s negligence on environmental management and it’s schoolyard bully approach to foreign relations have made the world, and the United States, less safe and a worse place to live.

Of the films mentioned above which I have seen, here are my short reviews:
Fog of War - Excellent. McNamara seems like a genuine, thoughtful man who tried to make the best of a situation handed to him. At times he even fought with Johnson over goals and strategy in Vietnam.
Loose Change - Completely unconvincing. A mountain of small unimportant facts and crazy theorizing in this video do not all tell a perfect story of a conspiracy. They do not come close, unless you go into it with your mind already made up. The director is stretching, so much that it is laughable. Clearly, the government was shown to be incompetent, not a mastermind, on 9/11. Go here if you’re still under the spell of Loose Change:
http://www.loosechangeguide.com/LooseChangeGuide.html
1984 - I have only read the book, but it was eminent and relevant, and I would suggest everyone read it who has not:
http://www.online-literature.com/orwell/1984/
V for Vendetta - A libertarian’s favorite film. Great plot, great action and beautiful cinematics. Buy it.
An Inconvenient Truth - The movie itself was fun to watch. Gore is a compelling person, but his science may be a bit flawed. Truth is, CO2 increases may be absorbed by the planet, and it may be naturally increasing in response to non-human causes. Even if humans were causing global warming, it may not make economic sense to place caps on emissions. (Notice how I said ‘may’ a lot. I could be wrong. But Gore could be too.) Check out the graph in the middle of this page:
http://www.geocraft.com/WVFossils/Carboniferous_climate.html
The Corporation - A few compelling interviews, and a lot of interviews with people who don’t make a good case, or just plain wrong sometimes. The extended Milton Friedman interview in the special features (and if you can find it, the Milton Friedman Chorus) are worth watching. I guess the movie is valuable in that it asks us to question our modern economic organization, but so does Thoreau’s ‘Walden’. And I think Walden does a better job of it.
Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room - Loved it. Not totally a family movie; there are boobies at one point. Enron typifies the story of modern man undone by his hubris. I loved that Fortune writer, she was smart AND hot.

Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb

Come on… Seriously people. Are you all that ill-educated that you think that these movies are based in 100% truth and have 0% bias? I don’t care what side of the political fence you’re swinging on, but documentaries and definitely Hollywood portray a bias one way or the other.

I’ve seen about 5 of the films on this list.
Lets be honest here, some of these films on the list aren’t totally true, and raise a lot of un-warranted claims. Your title sensationalizes 10 anti-government films that aren’t going to turn anybody’s head who knows a thing or two.
Remeber the fiasco about bowling for columbine? It’s the reason why these types of films dont get high success, because they aren’t documentaries. They are political commentary at best, and thats just a euphemism for “fiction.”

You know, I don’t normally comment… But I’m really tired of all this “people don’t care” rhetoric. Some people may not care, but the majority of people I talk to feel powerless to do anything. Here come the comments back at me: “They should vote”, “They should protest”, “They should write their Congressman”, “They should blah blah blah”. You can’t lump everyone who’s not at the complete left end of the spectrum as “people who don’t care”, since it’s just not true.
James Hudnall // Nov 29, 2006 at 12:45 pm
Actually, some of these films are nonsense. Loose Change is a scam. As is an Inconvenient Truth. The studies Gore cites in that film don’t reach the conclusions he says they do and the evidence he is relying on has been refuted by credible sources. Why We Fight is bogus fo several reasons. I like the Fog of War. I would also recommend Hearts and Minds, a Oscar winning Vietnam documentary.
The End of Suburbia movie relies on the peak oil myth. We are more than 100 years away from any kind of real shortage of oil. We just discovered a huge field in the Gulf of Mexico and we have vast untouched oil fields in Alaska and off the coast of California. Furthermore, Oil Shale is now being refined. Canada has a Oil Shale field that has more oil than Saudi Arabia at its peak.
A lot of these movies are scare films and are based on falsehoods. Like the scare eco-books of the 70s like the Population Bomb, they don’t hold up to reality.

The real Inconvenient Truth is that Al Gore had 8 years as Vice-president of the United States of America and during that time as number “2″ he did NOTHING to counter global warming. Global warming was a well known fact at the time and if anyone should have been able to do something I would have to believe that he was in the best position to do it.

A lot of these films are biased and push a certain agenda. I have seen Loose Change, An Inconvenient Truth and The Corporation… all of which are based on theory, and not a lot of fact. Especially An Inconvenient Truth… I mean, seriously, Al Gore is a politician! Doesn’t anybody think maybe, just maybe, he doesn’t care so much about the planet, as he does about how well his business interests are going to come off from this film? Instead of showing how our government is corrupted by the powerful, it is a thin defense of Libertarianism. “Freedom” from taxes has nothing to do with social freedoms. Without laws making corporations responsible, and taxes, the country would be ruled by the rich (even more than it is now). And that is NOT a good thing as some Libertarians might argue. If they are honest with themselves, they know that most of those rich people did not get that way by working hard or having a good idea. Most of them got rich by corruption- inheriting dirty money, running a monopoly, cheating people who were under foreclosure, using cheap foreign labor, etc, etc.
High taxes, used to give back some of the money to the poor that the corrupt rich stole from them, can exist along with social freedoms, privacy, freedom of religion, etc. If you study them you will find that Libertarians are disgusting, much worse than almost any other party. Rule by the corrupt rich, is that what you want?

Loose Change? WHY?!!! I actually do believe that there was a 9/11 conspiracy, but Loose Change has got to be the most pathetic piece of bull crap ever. There are dozens of movies that are far better (Soylent Green and Who Killed the Electric Car were mentioned, among others).

Umm last I checked this was “Satans” world so no I am not at all suprised as to what evil spills onto the floor in front of us. Looks like he’s right on schedule to me. Most men serve “Mammon” down here on earth and look no further so what can we really expect? However I really do love the movies posted and I truly appreciate your effort to try to let others know. All in all human stupidity still will always outweigh what is..

Just a suggestion, but “What the Bleep do we know?” is a pseudo-doc, and while it doesn’t talk about a government conspiracy exactly, it can show you things in a new light. I mention it here because the listed movies talk about the problems in the world, while “Bleep” gives you answers to problems with yourself, and you can’t fix the world with out blah blah blah.
Dino // Nov 29, 2006 at 11:42 pm
If noone else has mentioned it yet, I’d like to suggest the following:
Bob Roberts
Manufacturing Consent - N> Chomsky and the media
Also, anything involving John Pilger especially his books.
Thanks for the list.

The Fog of War is really the best you suggested, because the quality of the film in and of itself is far superior to the rest and the thematic implications are wide-ranging. McNamara stated that the “lessons” weren’t his idea, but were I him, I’d have taken credit. Errol Morris is simply a master of his art. One simply can’t go wrong watching anything he makes. Including, amazingly, Apple commercials.
I’ve seen a handful of the others listed — Vendetta, Why We Fight — and was unimpressed. Vendetta is just nonsensical. The only reason to see it is for a bald Natalie Portman, who shows that beauty does not require hair. Why We Fight was a confused and confusing outraged lament against bad decisions. I can’t disagree, but it’s like asking who’s against ending hunger. Well, nobody. You can’t make a film out of that. Very similar in that way to Gunner Palace, which was really nothing more than a survey of life in war time. It was two hours of “War is hell,” narrated in by man affecting a grizzled whisper.
The Corporation covers a subject I’m rather interested in and it featured two of America’s most important intellectuals, Chomsky and Friedman. These are two men who disagree greatly with one another and the disagreement is actually rather enlightening, as opposed to the usual shouting we’re subjected to on cable news. My only complaint about is that it was ever so slightly condescending to the free marketeer perspective. (It’s been awhile since I watched it, so NM and MF may only be on the DVD extras.)
Loose Change is pure fiction and a waste of time. If you’d like to see a film that instills doubt by a true master of propaganda look no further than JFK. It is masterful propaganda, filled with erroneous conclusions and fictional facts. The goal of JFK wasn’t to provide an alternate theory, it was to instill doubt and it did so far better than a work of fiction has any right to.
As far as 1984 — I’ll wait for the book.

Agreed on adding The Power of Nightmares. Also list “Orwell Rolls in His Grave” and anything by Michael Moore. “United 93″ might also qualify. When it was shown at the White House last spring (2006), Bush left immediately after it was over, not even bothering to say goodnight to his invited guests, Flight 93 victims’ family members. What a great guy!

What’s with all the “Loose Change” hate? I mean, don’t take it for pure, blinding truth - but, there is some legitimacy to the claims in the movie. Open your ass America, and quit being such a douche bag.
mhaberstumpf // Dec 1, 2006 at 11:01 am
You know all the Loose Change bashing seems a tad premature.
All the sites that were posted claiming to debunk the film didn’t really add up.
One site posted stills to debunk the “free fall” of the north tower. But it claims it took almost 18 seconds for it to fall. Hey, just Google the damn thing….
Another site showed the makers of the film with the guys from Popular Science. The Popular Science guys were selling a book claiming to debunk the film but all they wound up doing was saying they “asked the experts” claiming this was the ” most studied engineering failure in history” (clearly false—the steel has already been recycled by the Chinese and a minute portion of it was preserved for any study. So whatever “study” they are doing involves a lot of slide rules and little physical evidence). Then they go on to equate the film makers to Holocaust deniers.
In short I never thought the film had any accusations, only questions. Nothing wrong with that.

Regarding the movie Fog of War
It is subtitled - the x lessons of life of Robert McNamara.
Interesting how clear he is on the lessons learnt during his life.
Wonder how much editing was done or was he really that clear.
He was the one who initiated the trends leading to statistical analysis during wartime - and later in business and on to the Vietnam war.
McNamara exact words were that had we lost the war there was no question that we would of been convicted ( or similar word) as War Criminals .
Interestingly enough McNamara was branded for life as the technocrat who ran the vietnam war with all its foolish emphasis on body counts etc ( the numbers were inflated for head office so to speak).
However in the film are tape recordings from the Oval Office ( they all taped it was Nixon who got the ire of the Press)
where Johnson very clear tells McNamara to shut the f..k up.
I will do what I want.
A summary of the film can be seen at :

Anon // Dec 2, 2006 at 11:46 am
Loose Change asked some very incite full questions. That’s all. It didn’t make any claims. I’ve read all the debunking arguments and they still don’t answer the question that were raised by the film.
It leads me to believe that the debunking is actually government sponsored (eg. Bush administration paying people to visit sites/chat rooms and white wash their involvement).
THE TOWERS FELL AT ALMOST FREE FALL SPEED! When I watched it on TV the morning it happened, I knew something was rotten in the state of Denmark.
And the fact that Former Attorney Rudy Giuliani sold all the steel to China before it there was a chance to inspect the wreckage, smells like a cover up. He was an Attorney for God sakes! His excuse that he didn’t know doesn’t hold water.
Never mind that the real smoking gun is Tower 7. Does anyone know how long it takes to setup a planned demolition? I don’t personally know. But for Silverstein (owner)to admit they decided to “pull” the building and then it was done on the same day as the decision was made seems very suspicious.
Norad: North American Aerospace Defense Command, you know the guys who shoot down planes and defend the country against Air threat, they were told to stand down. Anyone remember Payne Stewart. Remember how fast NORAD scrambled the fighters when his plane was off course for only 2 minutes? How is it that NORAD was unable to react on 9/11?
Anyways, I loved Loose Change. Not that I agreed with everything they claimed, but because they raised some questions that needed answering. And because of this movie I did some research on my own. You see it was the catalyst for my own awakening, hence I believe it should be on this list.
I could go on and on about the inconsistencies of the Official 9/11 story but the moral is……
BE A STUDENT AND DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH, NOT A FOLLOWER AND LISTEN TO OTHERS.
BE A STUDENT, NOT A FOLLOWER
BE A STUDENT, NOT A FOLLOWER
BE A STUDENT, NOT A FOLLOWER

Regarding Loose Change. It is not the best place to start with this subject. In this case, better to read than to watch movies–try, for example, David Ray Griffin’s essay, ” The Destruction of the World Trade Center: Why the Official Account Can’t be True. ” (Just google it).
I used to be furious about people who doubted that the 9-11 attacks were anything but attacks by Islamic terrorists. Why on earth would the powerful in this country attack themselves? It’s too weird.
In the end, one is either convinced or not convinced by two types of evidence: logic and aesthetics. You can read and assess the logic of both sides for yourselves. I can’t help noting, however, that the aesthetics of those who attack the “9-11 Truth Movement” leave a lot to be desired. People who have a convincing case to make, somehow manage to make it without ad hominem attacks, with a calm style, sometimes even with a bit of class. Griffin may be mistaken, but he is genuine, and he acts like a human being.

i just watched “loose change vs popular mechanics”. now it seems pretty obvious to me that these “popular mechanics”-guys are some government sponsored marionettes. they use the same discussion tactics that politicians use, by avoiding direct answers, claiming they spoke to some “experts” (not naming ONE!) and asserting they have seen some evidence only they have seen. pretty poor.

What strikes me over and over is how confident are those critics of Loose Change that there was nothing involved but Islamic hating madmen. Amazing considering all the devastation brought about by the Bush administration AFTER the attack.
Watch the movies, read Chomsky and listen to your heart. Would you like to be a citizen of Iraq? Hmmm!? Do you think that there could ever come a moment in life that habeas corpus could be important to you?
