One feature I really miss, and was reminded of today since I tried out their updated version of the site, from del.icio.us is a way to group tags together. Is that a feature you're thinking of implementing?

While I'm at it. Is there a way to filter out bookmarks by selections of date when you search? It would be very neat for example to see all the bookmarks tagged with 'Inspiration' that I've added in 2008.

I know that Pukka for delicous loads the source of the bookmark with all meta-data. This way you can modify the already existing bookmark and republish it instead of publishing a second instance.

Anything like that doable with bookmarklets and widget here?

We have a tag management tool that appears at the bottom of your tags page (found under the You menu). Just click that button to manage tags and you'll be able to rename, remove and break apart multi-word tags across your whole bookmark collection. Hope this helps!

I'm wondering about Tag management and how it works.

I'm brand new to ma.gnolia and after importing from Firefox and de.lico.us - well, my tags are a MESS. I have been trying to delete unused tags and rename similar tags for about 3 hours now and I'm just exhausted with this process. There has to be an easier way... and if not ma.gnolia should really consider developing a better system for us OCD bookmarkers.

And hints, tips or ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If you go to your profile, click You | Your Profile on the navigation bar, you can associate OpenID's with your existing account. Once you authenticate the OpenID you can login to your accoutn with either your regular user id/password or with your openID(s). Hope that is answering the question you are asking.

I understand the distinction between groups and my bookmarks. The thing is that I don't want to bookmark that stuff, neither private nor public. I just want to bookmark it to the group without it ever appearing in my own bookmarks. I don't want to have to go in and start deleting in my bookmarks again, because that seems like one step too many.

Marking the link as private will do what you want, but I don't think that's possible.

When you save a link, save it as private (so it doesn't show up in your bookmarks), and you can still send it to your groups as normal. Understand that if you send a link to a group, it no longer is in your links, so you can delete it. And if you send a private link to a public group, it's obvious that you linked it at some point. You can also send public links to private groups.

Topic says it all. I have a group dedicated to a project of mine. It is a private group and I have no use for the bookmarks I make outside of that group.
I chose groups because it is nice to have bookmarks completely seperate from my bookmarks. Yet I have not found a way to add a bookmark only to a group. I can bookmark something and ADD it to a group with the bookmarklets. But then I have to go in and delete the bookmark form my normal bookmarks again. Seems like a fe steps too many to me.

Any suggestions?

It would definitely be easier for folks who are extending Ma.gnolia to have the ability to send a specific request, instead of trying to parse a larger feed for specific matchesa.

*** A way to add tags "on the fly" to pages. More or less like the google search box in the corner of firefox. Sometimes, I'd like to be able to enter a few keywords and hit enter to bookmark a page. When this field is used to add a new keyword, rather than opening the usual pop up, magnolia could automatically use the title of the page as the bookmark name. The next time we visit the page, it would be cool to be able to see the keywords we added to the page and be able to edit them if necessary.

Maybe this is too far out, but what about a tool that gave URIs to things that otherwise don't have one? Allow for the upload and ma.gnoliafication of offline resources by letting people have space in which to put those things.

This is more of a service request than an app request, but thinking about a desktop app made me think of all the files I have that would be great to share, tag and publicly "own." And considering how slick Ma.gnolia is and how smart you guys are, I bet this is something you've either considered doing or have thought of an alternative to. :)

It's possible for malicious users to attach this to a dummy URL (such as tinyurl) and post it on forums. If you're logged into ma.gnolia, it wipes out everything with no way to get it back.

That's a very good point, and one I hadn't noticed as I haven't tried to send bookmarks to users who aren't members of Ma.gnolia... I could definitely see the e-mail being ignored by the user if it even made its way through the filters. I'd love to see this change too.

Wow, there are some great ideas so far! I really like the idea of browser/system integration of bookmarks, as I currently use a FF extension to sync up bookmarks from work and home. Going to Ma.gnolia.com isn't quite convenient enough for me to use for commonly visited sites - this integration would change that.

Something else I would really like to see is a solid organizational interface that addresses my needs as an individual user and as a manager/moderator of groups. Having a desktop app that would allow me to easily drag and drop, move links between groups, delete links from my groups and consolidate tags would be great.

When I send a bookmark recommendation it goes out as an email from support@ma.gnolia.com. If the report goes to a non-member it's likely to get caught in a spam filter. I often send bookmarks to yahoo groups. I can't use ma.gnolia to do this because support@ma.gnolia.com isn't a member of any of the groups.

So, why not do what other sites do and spoof the recommendations as the recommender's email?

What if you could click on the white-blue Spotlight icon, or a Ma.gnolia Lens icon, and then have bookmark listings stream back as you as you start typing a search term? I'd use that.

That'd also be a nice integration point for browser-independent bookmarking -- you click on the Ma.gnolia Lens and then click on a little '+' to add the current page you're looking at, whether in Camino, Firefox, or Safari.

Is it possible? Currently, when i bookmark a site using one of the bookmarklets, there is an option to send that site to a group i subscribe to, but only 1 can be selected at any time. If i want to send to multiple group, i have to go to my personal page and send it to each group manually. It will be a timesaver, if i could send it to multiple groups when using the bookmarklet. thanks for any info.

If we added folders and tags, it would require pretty big changes to the interface and the way Ma.gnolia operates on a technical level. It's true that folders are more familiar for most people, but we feel that tags are more effective for organizing links despite the learning curve. When you look at the amount of work a person has to do to organize and maintain folders, tagging provides a very good return in exchange for a few seconds of work on each bookmark.

Sorry for the late response. As a matter of fact, a few years back I used to use an online Bookmark Manager (www.bookmax.net) which is user-friendly and the ease of use is simple. I guess probably you've used this bookmark manager. What I like about this site is that you can create a folder and save you bookmark in it which makes it easier to sort and search the links. And the UI is similar to Windows Explorer

I was used to this so I was searching here for the same functionality. So now I'm clear that "Tags" acts like a folder. However, I guess it would be easier for the users if there was an option to create folders.

Click Tags in the navigation bar at the top of the screen, then scroll to the bottom of your tag list and click the Manage Your Tags button. From there you can delete, rename, or split tags.

The cue we use not to make copies is when sites include the no-cache instruction. This is primarily intended for search engines, telling sites like Google and Internet Archive not to make copies of the page content. We think this is the best guideline we can follow.

If you look at the detail for a post, you will have an option to view a saved copy (if there is one). If you look at the detail for Sweden Looks to Bring Taxes In-World (View Details) you will see the option the site name.

There's nothing you need to do besides saving the bookmark.
Pages are archived within a few minutes of saving the bookmark in most cases. If we have many imports going on, the page archiver can fall behind and need some time to catch up. We can't save a page if the page code requests no caching, or if the site is unavailable when we try to make the copy.

I have read about saved pages in ma.gnolia, and in the FAQ it says that pages are only saved upon user request. Unfortunately, I can't figure out how to request a page to be saved, or where to view it after it's been saved.

Ah I see what you mean now. What's happening is that the groups where you've been checking out discussions have no more than 5 discussions. The most recent 5 discussions are shown under 'New Discussions', and when there are more than 5 the older ones are shown through a 'View All' link.

I can see how the organization doesn't communicate that very well, and I'd like to improve it in that respect. Any thoughts on how you'd like to view the discussions?

I found the link you mentioned, and what I see is "Your discussions in this group" and "Latest group discussions". To my mind, that tells me that there are more discussions (threads?) that are not "mine" or "latest". So perhaps it's just me misinterpreting the terminology.

Welcome, and cool avatar! That's one of our favorite custom jobs that we've seen so far :)

There are a number of points where you can get to all the discussions in a group. If you're in a specific discussion, there is a link beside its name heading. If you look at the homepage for a group, you'll see a few recent discussions and a link to see all.

I'm glad you found answers to the other questions. Hopefully you didn't have to work too hard. Let us know if there's anything else you can't spot or are wondering about.

We don't really have folders in Ma.gnolia. All bookmarks are organized through tags, and each tag sort of acts like a little folder that you can combine with others as you need to. What is it you want to do with the folder? We might be able to figure out a way to reach the same goal.

I tried it in one of my groups. The description still appears as one large paragraph. I used the Iron Kingdoms group. I added an extra return between paragraphs but still no luck.

Sean - 2 line breaks should start a new paragraph, and a single line break should start a new line, like P and BR tags. That should be sufficient, unless it's not working for you then we have a bug, but spacing out things without html tags should be working.

I went looking for the paragraph code for Textile formatting, and I found one reference that a blank line would make a paragraph, this does not seem to work. I also saw one that said that p. in front of the paragraph would but in the right code..but that did not seem to work either.

What am I doing wrong?

It seems like it has been months since (scakescoyu) first showed up on the Hot Bookmarks list, and I don't think it has left since. Anyone care to bet how long lovefifi.com will stay on the Hot Bookmarks list? Perhaps it will leave after Halloween passes.
