I came a bit late into this discussion, but it is indeed an interesting subject. I recognized the same for some services lately while researching and by going through older links, some services have stopped their web activities and do run pure mobile services. The only advantage I can think about is to become a specialist. But there are some other facts. Whereas the mobile internet is just in the beginning it is bigger than the web. There are about 2 billion mobile users but only 1 billion internet users (numbers came up some month ago). Something else is that the mobile carriers need something to monetize their expenses into the infrastructure. Lately the mobile internet usage starts to rise by new introduced flatrates and cheaper tariffs (at least in europe) and better bandwidth, formerly there has been a predominance of business usage. The technology of the mobile internet is here, but the mobile companies are still looking for killer apps to monetize their data services. I guess moving away from the web might be a sign of experimentation and / or an aggressive entry into a new market. Mobile companies are still visible at the web, because they rely on internet technology and do need domains.

New post by Aviva Gabriel in "Going Mobile and Portable"

At Dec 17, 06:44 PM Aviva said...

This discussion is ALMOST enticing...but in my sad, sordid, little case - it's just depressing. Wanna know why? I live three miles from Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH), but the rural terrain here -- and the fact that Verizon ran screaming from Vermont -- means that I have NO cell phone service anywhere near my home...NO wireless, no mobile...and my dialup internet accounts just set a speed record last week at 11.5 kbps!

So, thinking about an untethered web...I can't fathom it. It's outside my lived experience.

Do you realize that I've never been able to watch a YouTube video at home? And at work?...A buncha Luddites! I'd get fired for diddling around on the web, indulging in such crass delight for the glitter and tinsel of a tiny, blurry video moment.

So...I'm waiting until I finally turn 21 so I can go out drinkin--I mean, until I turn 75, so that I can get high speed internet and watch clips of Zorba the Greek and Jimi Hendrix dancing a tango for the last night's entertainment at InfoVis 2040!

And I wonder how long it'll take for this post to "post", at 11.5 kbps? Will it be 2 minutes this time? Or 3? Or will Firefox just stall out, keel over, and force me to reboot? Do I sound bitter?

I have pushing developers to move this direction for a few years with the "come to me web" (and the personal and local InfoCloud ideas) and walking some services through their options. We need to stop thinking of information on the web browser and think of how people need it in their lives (this is sort of America playing catch-up to the rest of the world too). Social networking sites moving in this direction is smart, but there are many many other smart things to do to.

At Sep 20, 02:01 AM Rasmus said...

At my company (broadcast media) we are slowly beginning to view mobiledevices as kind of "remotecontrols" for our users collected webpressence on our platforms. You should be able to micro-interact (rate, bookmark, twit etc.) with the mobile through the mobile-web, and later pick up those threads/actions when you are connected through the desktop-web. But the point is that desktop-web and mobile-web are just two different frontends/userplatform-filters for the same data-foundation.
So the answer would be that it should not be a move away from anything but an enhancement or extention of the users abillity to interact when and where it is meaningful for them. So I agree with Chris in his point ".. that's why APIs and open data is so important "

Sites like Twitter, which I can get to from twitterific if I'm on my machine, or twitter.com if I'm on someone else's machine, or pockettweet from my iPhone have a distinct edge.

In the same way that companies in the late 1990s realized that they needed a web presence, websites are realizing that they need a way for mobile devices to access them as well. The genius moves are those that take advantage or work well with the fact that a mobile user is on the go and using a different type of device from the usual computer display.

I think it's inevitable really, but that doesn't mean all sites a) need to change or b) that you have to start from scratch. You really should build technology that's adaptable for different contexts... that's why APIs and open data is so important -- rather than trying to build all the different permutations yourself, you can let those on the edge do it for themselves.

Just as I remember a time when having a remote control for your television was a luxury, we've transitioned from hard-wired phones to ubiquitous cellular service. The internet was, for years, tied to the land lines in the dirt. Now they're connecting over the air.

It's the next logical step.

As I added more and more sites I started adding social media tools such as Protopage and Loopnote which in some way connect you to social sites. Then Heather brought to my attention that people would like to post in-depth articles on the Social Media space (and not top 5 lists of blah, blah, blah articles either) but well formed, educational and interesting articles on social media behavior.

The group is simply meant to collect Social Media Sites and the Discussions are used for creating discussions threads about them. Its really all that simple.

Social Media - Sharing your web (not your site)

The collective works (not individual pages) of all things social on the web. Ranging from Blogs to Vlogs, Photo Sharing to Bookmarking to Video Distribution, Social Networks to Focused Communities, From Script Libraries to CSS Galleries. You have a bookmark that deals with (will have to change to "in") social media then this is the Group to be in.

For my part, I enjoy the whole social media sphere, and finding useful information on using existing services is probably more important to me than discovering an obscure version of a site I'm already engaged in.

Being able to act on a desire to know about something almost instantly is pretty powerful (when it doesn't burn all your time in finding new distractions). I take it for granted now that I can find out something about almost anything the moment I think about it, and that I can keep aware of what friends and others are up to without having to specifically ask them - things like recent and upcoming events, travel, life's little ups and downs - many of these come to me through the web, so when I connect with these people in regular life we already have a sense of what the other has been up to. It makes the conversations richer when they do happen.

So here are the questions we're asking:

Are you part of a virtual community, do you feel a need for pooling financial resources or sharing revenues?

If yes, what solutions are you currently using for achieving this?

Also:

Do you participate in a project that could use a platform implementing payment pooling and revenue sharing?

If you are not satisfied with current solutions, what are the key features that are missing?

this is part of an Organized Inquiry at http://www.wikiservice.at/fractal/wikidev.cgi?EN/BarCampBank/P2PMoney/P2PMoneyOrganizedInquiry

Any and all feedback welcomed. Thank you!

By keeping it to homepages I can sort of control what is allowable and what isn't without having to constantly monitor the group for spam.

Lately I have been considering posting Social Media related articles that focus on social networking behavior as well as revamping the Groups Rules but I have yet to decide on how to word it.

I also see the Operating System becoming web centric where all OS software is ran from manufacturers web server vice from the hard drive.

I guess though, I'm still a little confused as to how all of this works. Does anyone have a guide as to how to properly participate in and get a lot out of Ma.gnolia. From what I've seen so far, it seems people in this community submit interesting things they come across on the web, but I haven't figured out how the discussions (if they exist) take place. Can anyone clarify? Thanks.

Sometimes when reviewing possible spam bookmarks and the collections of suspected spammers, we find ourselves undecided. If we can't really decide, we err on the side of caution and don't take action.

Cesar, thanks for the extra information. We agree that an approval model is needed based on your experience here. My curiosity over the number of bookmarks comes from trying to decide if we should also have a way to clean out a spammer's bookmarks that might have been added prior to adding an approval feature. We'll get to work on this as soon as we can.

At Dec 22, 06:39 AM Cesar H said...

I haven't really been adding up all the non-related bookmarks that I have deleted from the group but if I were to estimate I say at least 20 or so, maybe even more. I am pretty sure you're tired of hearing me ask for an approval system but it would really keep the groups in check.

As I see it right now when you create a group you either:

1. maintain it yourself adding bookmarks all the time just to keep people joining and interested in the group. That's real dedication from one person trying to establish a group.

2. you invite certain people to your group to contribute and you hope everyone is on the same page and will actually contribute to the group and no feelings are hurt when a bookmark doesn't fit the group.

3. you make it public and establish a theme and pray everyone contributing gets it. You ask for helpers { Thanks Mr. Halff }, or they request to help you because the believe in the integrity of the groups value.

and in every situation when you bookmark it into the group the feed will pick it up and distribute it. So even when you delete the non-related bookmark from the main Groups page the damage has already been done. By implementing an approval system that allows the manager and moderators to verify the bookmarks before allowing them into the Group will help keep the integrity and value of each individual Group.

At Dec 20, 07:48 PM Cesar H said...

I have come to notice that the Social Media - Sharing your web group is beginning to expand rapidly. Even though this brings a big smile to my face it also brings nightmares to my sleep. To put it plainly:

"The group is being attacked by sneaky spammers trying to find a respectable community to unload there garbage on."

Before this grows to uncontrollable proportions I would like to lay down some ground rules for the Group:

1. The group is about Social Media - meaning the site being bookmarked pertains in some way to sharing, networking, and/or community.

2. Bookmarking a Homepage is preferable to bookmarking articles.

3. Bookmarking worthy causes pertaining to Social Media is also acceptable.

These ground rules are a continuing process but a beginning to Establishing the Social Media - Sharing your web group.
I ask the group for there opinions and assessment of these rules. For these rules will set how the Group will deal with any infractions.

Warning = Violation of these ground rules will result in banishment.

I need mainly to share my knowledge, which is based on links and RSS feeds.

I can achieve all (and maybe even prefer) by using sites which permit me embedded HTML or widgets.

I used now two services
http://grazr.com/
http://www.opmlmanager.com/index.php
And I can create easily OPML files of feeds I want to share, and I can share it by badge as I do on my cliamID
I also use
http://reader.gobits.com
Which is very new and will let me easily create mashed feeds from various posts and export it to new feed or OPML.
Most of the otehr features I was looking for exist here and there, so for example if Ma.gnolia group will let me and group members add feeds so even tree shaped discussions can be handled on Google and fed back as RSS feed.

But thanks any how

1. Discussion forum, in the shape of old USENET, like Google has today, with tree structure, and you can comment about any specific comment and not just added to the list as last.
2. Share feeds (going in not out), have all my feeds here, categorized and accessible to members.
3. Add notes about web pages whether bookmarked or not
4. Share extended profile details with group members (linkedin and more)

I know its new era today, so every site focuses on different direction.
I can show on Ma.gnolia bookmark and send it to group and its important feature.

I have my public profile on myclaimid and there I can add bookmark related to me and have even chat widget
http://claimid.com/rsegoly
I want to show it on Mongolia as well, as I will have profile details related to group members only

I have my RSS feeds shared with others on Grazer (see badge on myclaimid), I want either to have feature on group here, or display Grazer here

I have my bookmark in Diigo (when I bookmark there, its pushed to ma.gnolia delicious and others), but I can add notes and highlight to parts of bookmarked page on Diigo.

I am not sure ma.gnolia should have all these features, it has its own character, but I was happy if I can create here at the group, environment which brings info from other sites, probably ability to add embedded HTML will resolve many of the issues.

Of course everything should be fed out as RSS, but ma.gnolia is very good at it.

I hope it help, I like this site (but its sometimes too slow)

Do you really use more than one at a time?
New post by Aviva Gabriel in "Add This Needs Magnolia"

At Nov 29, 06:54 PM Aviva said...

I love ma.gnolia so much that I just got ma.gnolia added to another great tool, the Web 2.0 toolbar. All it took was a simple request via post on their website.

A week later, I stumbled upon the owner's announcement that ma.gnolia (and Spurl, which I also requested) had been added to their "Submit It" dropdown menu.

To see the announcement about ma.gnolia, and to download the Web 2.0 toolbar if you choose, go to: http://www.web20.toolbar.com

Here's a clip of the announcement:

"Fans of the social bookmarking sites Ma.gnolia and Spurl now have a new and easier way to save web pages to their accounts. The Spurl and Ma.Gnolia applets have been added to the POWER SUBMIT feature on The Web 2.0 Toolbar. Ma.gnolia is part social bookmarking and part blogging in one application and a great resource for what people are looking for on the web. Spurl is another social bookmarking service that has captured a good following on the web. If you have a an account for either of these services, simply select the Ma.gnolia or Spurl options from the SUBMIT IT! pull-down menu when you are on a page that you would like to save. Thanks to Aviva for requesting these sites - I should have had Ma.Gnolia on the toolbar earlier. I’m also looking into a 3rd application requested by Aviva that should be on the toolbar soon."

(end of clip)

I like that their "Submit It" feature includes a bookmarklet/javascript for "OnlyWire," which allows for submission to multiple bookmarking sites.

I also like having web pages archived on multiple sites, so that I can be sure to have an accessible backup, should any one of them cease providing their services. Or, maybe I'm just being kind of doglike, peeing on as much territory as I can...although I prefer the first rationale!

Anyway, I recommended Spurl because they archive web pages (like ma.gnolia, and like Furl)...and because they automatically submit your bookmarks to del.icio.us (if you choose that preference setting).

Before encountering my beloved ma.gnolia, I had accumulated quite a slew of bookmarks, networks, and del.icio.us user feeds, which I didn't want to give up when I shifted most of my attention to ma.gnolia.

The Web 2.0 toolbar has other features you might enjoy. I haven't bothered to investigate whether or not they have features that you might NOT find so enjoyable, however. I'm blissfully unaware of their datamining, their security, and all that jazz.

One thing to keep in mind is that if a bookmark is already in a group, we don't do anything on subsequent adding. We're also looking at making tags more collaborative in groups than individual. Not that we're against standard tags for managing things, we just don't want people doing work where they don't need to :)
and then where it says Publish and Subscribe in RSS and more, click 'more' and you will see code for a link roll from this group. We'll soon make it possible to publish tag rolls too.
I hope this helps, and it gets around the need to try and coordinate everyone's tags. It's a big part of why we made groups, so that trying to hack it together with tags wouldn't be necessary. Let me know if you have any trouble getting it to work.

At Nov 27, 09:56 AM Cesar H said...

Good question Todd,

The reason I am asking to implement a universal tag is because I use the link roll generator on my site using a personal tag I use for generating the links and I would like to cut down my process of having to insert an extra tag.

Now If I could generate a link roll list from the Group that would make my life a little easier too.

I also think it just makes sense to have a universal tag within a Group for better searches outside of the group. For example let's say a Group Member searches for "social networking" and within the tags displayed the member notices the tag "socialmedia" in the results. This would alleviate the problem our Group Members, who like to contribute, from wasting time trying to submit a bookmark that already exists in the Group.

Now if the search results already displayed a Group associated with the bookmark then this would not make much sense. Seeing that it doesn't I would like to see a universal tag. Much like in Flickr.

What would you hope to get out of using this tag? The group itself rounds up everything inside it, so the contents of a socialmedia tag would be the same as the group contents. Also, why not use 'social media' to take advantage of spaces :) ?
Just some thoughts.

With the growing number of members in our group I have found it a little daunting to remind myself to copy over all the new bookmarks from the group to the site.

What I am trying to say or ask is if there are any suggestions as to any one universal tag to use for the Social Media - Sharing your web Group for easier searching, copying, and sharing?

I suggest "socialmedia"

Tell me what you all think?

When you compare Meebo design to wablet, you see huge difference, and new services should always look like meebo.

Wablet is so confusing and I did get lost.

I also posted to wablet forum and no answer yet, so when I get confusing UI and no signs of good support, for product which just launched, I move on.

Meebo also have widget I can put at my wiki and blog and some email signature.

I saw plaxo, and joined, but there you need to be their member to get updated details.

So what do I need (and will look later at calimid)
1. Public URL I can share with everyone, and widget to paste on my pages
2. The link will lead to my updated details, like I have at plaxo
3. Simple solution to laymen visitors

So its combination of meebo and plaxo

I have been using http://www.wablet.com at http://www.myspace.com/standardsociety and at http://www.standardsociety.com/index.php/blog/contact/ for about a week now and it is was a little daunting to cut and paste all the codes to each one of the online profiles but it's (personally) worth it to maintain one site to be able to communicate on all the others. It also seems to have hiccuped the last couple of days, when it loads and freezes at "retrieving contact information..." I am currently searching around for other similar tools.

Subscribe to the Social Media - Sharing your web feed for updated Social Media Websites the group finds.

Good Luck and happy hunting.

This service looked promising when I read about it
http://www.wablet.com/
But now I am in and its quite confusing and maybe typical new Web2.0 service (get in as much as you can....)
