Media Futures 'Not your father's media' Nico Macdonald, Wordrobe, Issue .1, August 2006
If media incumbents are to survive and prosper they will need to cultivate more imagination, be bolder and take more risks. But the publishing industry's editorial models are still stuck in the nineteenth century, with their focus on the discrete news story, opinion piece and feature. We also need to be able to take advantage of material recommneded by trusted friends and colleagues, and of better visualisation of information spaces. This is the domain of designers, who can also play a more strategic role in innovation, around processes as well as products and services. Above all, designers as the representatives of ‘the people’ can motivate a project by focusing on creating great products and services for them, and transcend professional and disciplinary boundaries by raising questions to the level of what is best for the user.
