Basically, if you can find the beginning of an ext2/ext3 partition, it is then easy to find from the filesystem metadata how large the partition ought to be.

This simple HOWTO saved my day when it came to actually setting up an encrypted partition with LUKS on Ubuntu 7.10. Some information from the official dm-crypt site was also useful but this one had most of it nicely condensed.
