Boulton offers a refinement to the "vertical rhythm" CSS techniques that have gotten so much attention lately. It's an adaptation of a print design technique that keeps smaller sidebar text form being too widely spaced, while still maintaining an overall sense of rhythm and proportion. Drawbacks: runs afoul of Safari bugs, results may be dependent on the presence of certain fonts.

Mark Boulton builds on Richard Rutter’s “Composing to a vertical rhythm” and Wilson Miner’s “Setting Type on the Web to a Baseline Grid.” He shows how to use incremental leading for side notes and other small type.
