Ma.gnolia Blog: Just Like It's Our Birthday!
Today is a big day for Ma.gnolia: it’s our first birthday!
One very full year ago we opened our doors to the world after a bustling beta period. We’re surprised and delighted to find ourselves at the here, driven by the diverse, passionate and smart people who make up our members.
Of course we want to say thanks to all of you for being here. We know it’s vote of confidence to entrust your bookmarks to us and we promise to keep doing our best to help you make the most of them.
Exclusive to this month’s newsletter will be some previews of upcoming features, so if you’re not subscribed just jump to your profile and update your preferences to receive the newsletter. That will be published tomorrow, but for the blog readers we have something special to share with you early.
We wish we could say thanks for every bookmark added to Ma.gnolia, because where would we be without all those nuggets of web gold.
As of today, we can start do just that with a little addition we’ve made. It comes from Chris Messina, and his thoughts on Information philanthropy (View Details), and at its core is simply a way to say thank you to someone because you like one of their bookmarks. When you see someone else’s bookmark, or when you’re copying one, you can give thanks. The person whom you thanked will see that you thanked them. Easy as that.
Thanks are just between two people, they can’t be viewed by other members. Recent people who thanked you will appear in the sidebar, and you can explore those connections from that point in detail. We think this is one way of keeping the humane aspects of working and playing together online in balance with the technically cool stuff we can pull off.
So go spread some good karma, and see what comes back to you from just sharing what you find.

Wow! What a great idea! Right now I feel very lucky to have chosen Ma.gnolia. So thank you Todd, Larry & the rest of the team, for making this great website. I'll be looking forward to the new features!
And Happy Birthday!

Okay, so I didn't just miss something over the past couple of months...I wondered where that "GIVE THANKS" line came from, and how come I couldn't see it on my page. Nice idea.

Happy Birthday!
Enjoy the party, wish I could have come by. I think the give thanks feature is an awesome idea, a great extension of the Ma.gnolia community.

Thanks for the thanks tool!
A request—can we have the thanks button everywhere the links are listed (especially in group lists), please?
Larry on February 20, 2007
Grant: Definitely on the thanks links are coming. One question we had was what does it mean to thank a group bookmark. We suspect simplest is best, which is your thanking the person who contributed it to the group. Any else have any thoughts?

Larry: I agree. Thanking the person who added the link is definitely what I would want to do—wherever the link may appear.
Basically, I would like the “Give Thanks” button to appear with every link (except when viewing the links I’ve posted, since I probably don’t want to thank myself). I would expect the button to behave identically whatever context the link is in (contacts list, user profile, group list, etc.).
Thanks.

Congratulations! It definitely feels like longer than a year for me, but that's just me.
Anyways, Happy Birthday!
