Just a generation ago, says Democratic political strategist Dan Newman, "you couldn't go anywhere near'' such a statement, which "would have been political suicide.'' Stark's frank declaration that he is "a Unitarian who does not believe in a Supreme Being'' indicates, says Newman, that a significant page has been turned -- and maybe it's not such a political liability anymore. But he adds that "time will tell whether this is a case of the Bay Area being far out front -- or merely far out.''"

Ernst-Jan Pfauth says something I was biting my lips about at the Next08 conference: why are all the German startups fixated on German language versions of Web 2.0 apps? Hardly anyone but native Germans can use them, right? Not to mention the second fact that Pfauth mentions: by presenting in German various non-German speaking 'influentials' at the conference (he mentions Steve Rubel and me) couldn't understand what they are up to. Need to think about glocalization, not localization.

"In Zimbabwe, where a television cameraman was abducted and beaten to death last year, Barry Bearak of The Times was arrested last month and charged with “committing journalism.” The arrest came on the same day that Bearak’s byline ran on Page 1 from the capital, Harare. He had asked that his byline be left off articles about Zimbabwe’s elections but had just changed his mind, in part because his main American competitors were not being so guarded. Bearak told me he was certain that his arrest at a small, out-of-the-way hotel half-filled by Western journalists had nothing to do with his byline. “They did not seem familiar with me or my work,” he said. Had he switched hotels that day, as he had originally planned, he said, he probably would not have been arrested. Bearak, who was injured in a fall in his cell and contracted scabies, was released after four nights and left Zimbabwe." I've had scabies, and believe me, that is like hell on earth. I wouldn't even wish it on a convicted journalist.

"“It’s very clear that a significant portion of the increase in transit use is directly caused by people who are looking for alternatives to paying $3.50 a gallon for gas.” Some cities with long-established public transit systems, like New York and Boston, have seen increases in ridership of 5 percent or more so far this year. But the biggest surges — of 10 to 15 percent or more over last year — are occurring in many metropolitan areas in the South and West where the driving culture is strongest and bus and rail lines are more limited. Here in Denver, for example, ridership was up 8 percent in the first three months of the year compared with last year, despite a fare increase in January and a slowing economy, which usually means fewer commuters. Several routes on the system have reached capacity, particularly at rush hour, for the first time. “We are at a tipping point,” said Clarence W. Marsella, chief executive of the Denver Regional Transportation District, referring to gasoline prices." That's all it takes to get people to move from the car culture to one that is more sustainable: raise the price of gas. So clearly, if the feds want to channel behavior in the right way we should start to slowly, slowly increase taxes on gas, and divert the money to building more mass transit.
